MONROVIA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Liberian religious leaders, including Christians, Muslims and traditionalists have launched a campaign to solicit 100,000 signatures to oppose the legalization of same-sex marriage and decriminalization of sodomy.

The signature solicitation campaign was formally launched here Sunday.

Speaking at the launching ceremony Sunday, the General Chairman of the Anti-gay Rights Campaign , Reverend Kortu Brown said the scheme launched in September this year, has so far collected 25, 000 signatures.

Also speaking at the launching ceremony, the President of the Muslim Council of Liberia, Sheikh Kafumba Konneh, said same-sex marriage was against the national traditional value system.

He said the practice of same sex marriage "demeans the social dynamics of both women and men" and therefore should not be tolerated.

The campaign was organized by the pro-democracy and religious group, New Citizens' Movement, in collaboration with the National Traditional Council of Liberia and the Inter-Religious Council which groups together both Christians and Muslims, among others.

A legislation seeking to criminalize same sex marriage and sodomy introduced in the lower house of Liberia's bicameral legislature early this year, is yet to be passed into law.
