SUVA, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Fijian President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, who was first sworn in as president in November 2009, was formally sworn in for another term of three years in office at the Government House in Suva on Monday.

The ceremony was conducted by Chief Justice Anthony Gates. The reappointment process was carried out under the Executive Authority Decree after the Great Council of Chiefs -- the body that used to appoint the president -- was suspended in the 2006 coup and formally disestablished by decree earlier this year.

Nailatikau had a long career in the military, diplomatic service, and the Fijian government. From 2001 to 2006, he served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, which is the lower and more powerful chamber of the Fijian Parliament.

On April 17, 2009, Nailatikau was appointed vice-president by the military government. On July 30, 2009, he became acting president after the retirement the 88-year-old Ratu Josefa Iloilo and was sworn in as president on Nov. 5, 2009.
