Volunteers
After the Wenchuan Earthquake, the number of volunteers has kept growing. Efforts of volunteers have become an integral part of disaster relief and reconstruction.
Many local taxi drivers bought goods and materials of earthquake relief and drove more than 200 kilometers to offer helps in quake-hit area right after they heard the news.
Many vehicles carrying supplies were stuck on the narrow roads. A thin middle-aged man stood in the middle of the road and directed the traffic voluntarily.
Liu Jingsui, 55, from Guangzhou, happened to be in Sichuan the day after the Wenchuan Earthquake. Liu was on his way to Longmen on feet when he saw the traffic jam. He then worked as a voluntary traffic controller for a whole week.
Two months after the Wenchuan Earthquake, Liu quit his job, and bought a bicycle. He rode 2,394 kilometers from Guangdong to arrive in Wenchuan, Sichuan province after 18 days, on July 12, 2008,
Liu offered more than 5,800 hours’ voluntary work in a year in Wenchuan county. He was awarded "honorary citizen of Wenchuan county" in 2009.
"I help where I can and I will leave when I am not needed,” Liu adds, “I will be back to Caopo county where I did voluntary work on the fifth anniversary of Wenchuan quake”.
