'Life of Pi' among AFI best films in 2012
The American Film Institute ( AFI) picked the Academy Awards forerunners including "Argo," "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Lincoln" as top choices for a list of 10 best films in 2012, the group announced in Los Angeles on Monday.
The trio of critically well-received films were also joined by other hits including "Les Miserables," "Silver Linings Playbook," Ang Lee's fantasy film "Life of Pi," Christopher Nolan's superhero film "The Dark Knight Rises," director Benh Zeitlin's debut " Beasts of the Southern Wild" and Wes Anderson's latest indie movie "Moonrise Kingdom." Dubai int'l film festival opens with 'Life of Pi'
The 9th Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) opened Sunday with "Life of Pi" and will have dozens world premieres in eight days.
The festival, which will run through Dec. 16, will show 161 films from 64 countries in 43 languages, among them 52 world premieres. Read more >>>

COMPARE WITH BACK TO 1942
Life of Pi and Back to 1942, miseries and redemption
Many viewers like "Life of Pi", a movie directed by Chinese Hollywood director Ang Lee, but do not like "Back to 1942", another movie by Chinese director Feng Xiaogang, because faith saved cruel reality in the former while the cruel reality smashed all beliefs in the latter.
The two movies were shown almost at the same time and both of them told a story about hunger, disaster, survival, human nature and faith. However, they are very different in narrative style and value orientation. Read more >>>
