The ASEAN countries hope:
First, the United States and China can make their bilateral relationship not too competitive.
Second, the United States and some ASEAN countries do not make China feel that they are containing it.
Third, the United States should realize the importance of regional integration of Asia and the economic integration of the ASEAN, China, Japan and South Korea, and show respect for “the primary task of the ASEAN."
Chen Gang, research fellow at the East Asian Institute at the National University of Singapore: The ASEAN has been making efforts to develop bilateral relations with both China and the United States, and does not want to weaken its relations with one of them for the relations with the other.
The relationship between the ASEAN and China was not influenced too much by the United States' returning to Asia-Pacific and the issue of the South China Sea. Deteriorating the relationship with China is not in line with the interests of ASEAN and the Southeast Asian media are also optimistic about the future relations between China and the ASEAN.
