Toyota recalls 2.77 million vehicles over steering, pump defects (3)

More specifically the transport ministry said of the pump flaw that electric coils in the pumps could short-circuit, due to " inappropriate" production methods.

Toyota said 345,144 units of its Prius models are affected by the pump defect and 164,532 units also have faulty steering shafts.

Other models the company said needed to be inspected and fixed include its popular Corolla sedan and other compact models including the Isis and Wish.

The automaker said of its overseas models that 1.25 million will be recalled, including 670,000 Prius vehicles in the United States.
