Chinese inheritor of intangible cultural heritage demonstrates sachet-making technique at 2nd CIIE

Chen Xingzhi, an inheritor of sachet, a traditional embroidered handicraft and one of China’s intangible cultural heritages, displayed sachet-making techniques on Nov. 8 at the second China International Import Expo (CIIE), thepaper.cn reported Friday.

Sachet is an embroidered folk handicraft in China. Traditional sachets are usually made of silk, contain perfume like realgar and folium artemisiae argyi, and have auspicious patterns embroidered on them.

Sachets have been used as auspicious decorations and regarded as a way of avoiding misfortune and driving away disease.

According to Chen, making a sachet requires seven to eight steps, including embroidery, cutting cloth into certain shapes, adding perfume, stuffing cotton into the sachet, sewing, and fastening the tassel.

“A sachet is a finished product only if it combines good appearance and practical use,” said Chen.
