HOUSTON, Aug. 26 -- Chinese Consulate General in Houston on Sunday showcased Chinese traditional culture at the Theater District Open House in Houston, Texas, the United States.
It was the first time that the consulate general participated in the annual event that signified the start of the fall performing arts season in Houston.
At the Jones Hall in downtown Houston, people were encouraged to write Chinese characters with traditional brush. There was also a chance to take photos with Peking Opera actresses dressed in colorful costume.
Lynne James and her husband enjoyed Theater District Open House every year. Instructed by Chinese consuls, she tried Chinese calligraphy for the first time.
"I love Chinese culture and hope to see the beautiful country someday," she said.
Chinese Consul General in Houston Cai Wei told Xinhua that the consulate general wants to reach out to demonstrate the beauty of Chinese cultural to Americans.
"Cultural exchange is the ballast stone and propeller of Sino-U.S. relationship," he said. "Relationship between countries is based on relationship between people."
On Sunday, many people arrived long before the noon kick-off of annual Theater District Open House. Indoor and outdoor, lots of programs were provided for participants of all ages to experience and have fun with different arts.
There were crafting, game activities and live band performances at several theaters. Houston Symphony had an "Instrument Petting Zoo" for people to try and play instruments that they have never touched before.
