Editor's note: Chinese New Year is coming on Feb. 8, 2016. Let's have a look at traditions before and during the Spring Festival.
The Chinese New Year is celebrated according to the Chinese calendar, which is divided into twelve months of 29 or 30 days each. The last month of the year is called Làyuè.
Preliminary Eve (Chinese: Xiaonián ) is celebrated on the 23rd day of the last month in north China or the 24th in south China. The day marks the beginning of preparation for the new year festivities, and people start to buy food for the big meal on New Year’s Eve. (Xinhua/Feng Yincheng)
