U.S.-WASHINGTON-BRIGHTEST-EVER SUPERNOVA

This picture provided by Wayne Rosing shows two of the 14-centimeter diameter lens telescopes in use for the All Sky Automated Survey for SuperNovae (ASAS-SN) that discovered ASASSN-15lh. An international team of astronomers, led by Subo Dong from China's Peking University, said Thursday they have spotted a violent stellar explosion, known as a supernova, that is about 200 times more powerful than a typical supernova and more than twice as luminous as the previous record holder. At its peak intensity, the explosion, called ASASSN-15lh, shone brighter than 570 billion Suns.
