In 2014, a team led by Yuan Longping, known in China as "the father of hybrid rice" set a record for hybrid rice production with an average yield of 1,026.7 kilograms per mu (0.0667 hectares).
The new progress surpassed the 1,000 kilogram per mu target set by the Chinese Agriculture Ministry in 2013, indicating that China is leading the world in research on hybrid rice technology and also providing technical support for national food security strategies.
