Yang Lei is a graduate student who majored in martial arts at Chengdu Sports University. He was diagnosed with bone cancer in his left leg in 2008. After seven years of struggling, Yang is facing a hip replacement or even high amputation. Under great pressure from her parents, Yang’s girlfriend, Caixia, has been taking care of him for five years, and even asks Yang to marry her. Yang and Caixia run an online shop selling shoes. They did not expect that donations totaling over 500,000 yuan would be gathered through their shop in just a few days.

Caixia put up a “1 yuan” donation section on their online shop, hoping to gather a little money for Yang’s treatment. After their touching story was reported, thousands of netizens visited their shop. In two days, over 20,000 people donated 1 yuan, and some even bought hundreds of pairs of shoes to support Yang. By the end of November, over 500,000 yuan had been donated online.

Yang Lei began to feel uneasy about the money they gathered. He kept thinking about how to let all these people know that the money they donated would be well spent on treatment, and about how to repay these kind-hearted people. The next day, Yang went to consult with two lawyers about his concerns. They reassured him and encouraged him to first focus on his treatment. Yang has organized the information of all the people who made donations, and has added a hand-written thank you note to every shoe box he sells.

“I know you probably do not need this pair of shoes. Your glowing sincerity and loving heart really makes my day. Your good deed gives me hope for life. I will keep on fighting.”
