Yu Changli was born in Chengfengyuan Village, Chun'an County of east China's Zhejiang province in March of 1926. He joined the army in 1941, returned to hometown and made a living by farming in 1949.
Although slight of figure, Yu Changli used to be a heavy machine gunner in his team. Seeing that people have some doubts about his ability to carry heavy machine guns, Yu suddenly standed up and walked outdoor, showed the gesture of holding the heavy machine gun and aiming at the target. "I wiped out many Japanese invaders with heavy machine guns,"Yu said proudly.
In September of 1943, successively-defeated Japanese invaders waged the Battle in Zhejiang and Jiangxi in the Southeast China battlefield. As the troops advanced, Yu went to Changhua County, east China's Zhejiang province, fought against the Japanese invaders until the war was over. Chinese civilians and soldiers were so excited to witness the victory of Chinese people's war of resistance against Japanese aggression. Talking about this experience, Yu seemed to be immersed in the happiness of regaining peace of that year.
Leaving the army, Yu returned to his hometown, got married and had children. Nearly 90 years old, Yu is still healthy and keeps a good habit of getting up in 5:00 a.m. every morning and takes a walk around the village. "Thanks to the Communist Party of China, I can enjoy the rural pension and live a stable life. I am happy even though I am not rich," said Yu.
