"My foot was hurt and bleeding, but it was the most meaningful medal of my life," said Zhang Yingying.

On the first day of track and field events of the Gwangju Universiade on June 8, a shocking scene happened in the women's 10,000-meter race: The right shoe of Chinese runner Zhang Yingying was stepped off by other runner when she had finished about 5,000 meters. However, Zhang didn't slow down. She kept running on the slippery racing track.

Liu Bo, the leader of the Chinese delegation, said: "It is normal have your shoes stepped off. But usually athletes will continue to run only when it is the last lap. Otherwise most runners will give up or slow down."

Much to people's surprise, Zhang not only continued to run in the drizzle and stayed in the first group, but also ranked second at the last lap. However, with a bare foot, she was overtook by the Russian runner at the last moment and won a bronze medal.

"I would have won the gold if I was wearing spiked shoes." Zhang said with regret.

Zhang finished in 32 minutes 56.60 seconds, only 1.25 seconds slower than the silver winner.
