8. Open-air museum
When the historical center of Macao became a world heritage site, it represented 13 percent of Macao's land. Some years ago the government of Macao launched its "Open-air museum" plan, to protect the historical buildings and meet the needs of tourism at the same time. Statistics show that the number of people visiting museums in Macao has increased by 15 percent compared with last year.
9. 15-year compulsory education
Macao is one of few regions that have a 15-year compulsory education system. Starting from the 2007-2008 academic year, children in Macao will enjoy 3 years of preschool education, 9 years of compulsory education, and 3 years of high school education.
10. Public housing
Public housing is provided by the government to low-income families or individuals. By the end of 2013, Macao had 45,573 public houses for people in need.
11. Reclaiming new land
In 2009 the State Council approved a proposal by the Macao SAR government for a 3.61 square-kilometer land reclamation project. The new project will create more public facilities and green spaces, as well as setting aside plots of land for public housing projects and for the development of business sectors promoting economic diversification.
