On September 2, 1945, the surrender ceremony was held aboard the United States Navy battleship USS Missouri. The representatives of the Allied Powers included General of the Army Douglas MacArthur of the United States, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz of the United States, Admiral Sir Bruce Fraser of the United Kingdom, General Hsu Yung-chang of China, Lieutenant General Kuzma Derevyanko of the Soviet Union, General Sir Thomas Blamey of Australia, Admiral Conrad E.L. Helfrich of the Netherlands, General Jacques LeClerc of France, Colonel Lawrence Moore Cosgrave of Canada, Air Vice Marshal Leonard M. Isitt of New Zealand. Japanese representatives on board USS Missouri included Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijiro Umezu, Chief of the Army General Staff.
