Located in Dunhuang City, northwest China’s Gansu province,the Mogao Caves (also known as the Caves of the thousand Buddhas) are best known for the exquisite murals and vivid sculptures. The Mogao Caves, along with Longmen Grottoes, Yungang Grottoes, Maijishan Grottoes, are one of the four famous sculptural sites of China and also the largest and richest treasure house of Buddhist art in the world. The caves became one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1987. There are 735 caves containing 2415 clay sculptures and 45,000 square meters of murals.
