A young couple has set up a 'self-sufficient lab' in a village on Laoshan Mountain in Qingdao, a coastal city in east China's Shandong Province, to study how to supply all basic life necessities themselves and thus lead an independent life.
Tang Guanhua, 25, said he and his wife Xing Zhen have lived on the mountain for three years, during which, with the help of their friends, they learned how to build a cabin and make oil, sugar. Xing also learned how to spin, make shoes and clothing. They even make fire using the most primitive methods.
The couple tried to design what they need and provide feedback on any problems they encountered. In the face of all the difficulties, they said they hold a positive mind, as they have previously put a lot of thoughts into this endeavor.
They step completely out of step with modern life, except computers and internet in their lab. They said that they use solar power and human power to generate electricity. Their secluded lab carries their "eco-friendly " philosophy of life and the pastoral dream.
