BANGKOK, Jan. 22 -- Chinese citizens who plan to leave for Thailand have been urged to think cautiously before traveling to capital Bangkok and surrounding areas.

The Chinese Embassy in Thailand asked Wednesday Chinese citizens to closely follow the situation and keep away from protest sites after the Thai caretaker government invoked the emergency decree in the capital and some parts of the adjacent provinces.

The decree, effective for 60 days from Wednesday, has been imposed to cope with the violence and bloodsheds which might be repeated following recent bomb blasts in the heart of the capital.

According to Foreign Ministry Permanent Secretary Sihasak Phuanggetkeow, only part of the emergency decree has been invoked, which does not involve banning or dispersing protests, censoring the media or imposing restrictions on the freedom of movement or curfews.

Chinese citizens need to protect themselves and can contact the embassy when in need, the Chinese embassy said in a statement posted on its website.
