Fire accidents led to 14 deaths and direct economic losses of 31 million yuan (five million U.S. dollars) during the seven-day national day holiday from Oct. 1, according to the fire bureau under the Ministry of Public Security.
The bureau said in a Tuesday statement that more than 5,550 fire alerts were received during the period but no major fatal accidents were reported.
According to the bureau, police and fire departments focused on shopping malls, public entertainment venues, tourist attractions, celebration activities, transportation hubs and other crowded places in a campaign to check fire risks during the holiday.
Figures from the bureau show that more than 138,000 cases of such risks were rectified during the campaign, and 405 units were forced to suspend business for fire safety violations.
During the holiday, firemen rescued 2,655 people and salvaged property worth 330 million yuan, the bureau said.
