Fine to Beijing street barbecue up to 20,000 yuan

BEIJING, July 25 (Xinhuanet) -- China's smog-ridden capital is considering new anti-pollution measures, including issuing a fine of up to 20,000 yuan to those who operate street barbecues in open areas where the activity is banned.

A new draft regulation was deliberated at a meeting of the Beijing municipal People's Congress held Wednesday.

According to the Beijing News, the fine was raised to four times the value of the original 5,000-yuan fine, as authorities scramble to respond to rising public pressure over the city's deteriorating air quality.

The PM 2.5 levels, relating to the fine particulate matter which causes severe damage to one's lungs, around street barbecues in Beijing is sometimes about one thousand times higher than the readings taken before the charcoal starts to burn, according to a Beijing News report based on its own on-the-spot investigation.
