Police detained some 2,000 people in a special raid on a luxury hotel in Dongguan, a city celebrated for its entertainment industry in Guangdong province, on Thursday.

According to a press release from the Dongguan bureau of public security, the operation was launched in Zhongtang township at about 2 am when more than 500 police officers, plus 600 security guards and 50 police dogs, raided the Junhuang Hotel.

Police quickly detained a large number of suspected prostitutes and their clients, as well as people in possession of drugs when they inspected 57 KTV rooms, situated in the hotel's second and third floors, according to Li Zhuohua, deputy director of Dongguan Bureau of Public Security, who was in charge of the operation that ended at about 5 am.

"Police also seized some drugs and knives at the scene," Li told local media.

The hotel has been required to close for rectification, while the general manager of the hotel has been detained for further investigation, Li added.

Located near an expressway exit, the hotel was popular with both locals and visitors from major cities in the Pearl River Delta, who visited the hotel at weekends and during holidays.
