TAIPEI, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Local police investigations have confirmed that a 20-year-old male student from the mainland studying at Fu Jen Catholic University in Taiwan committed suicide on Monday.
Local police authorities said Wednesday that the doors and windows at the dorm where he hanged himself were intact. There was no evidence of a struggle or foul play, and the possibility of murder was ruled out after forensic experts conducted an autopsy.
The victim, surnamed Liu, was from Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, according to Wang Yu-chi, Taiwan's mainland affairs chief. His roommate found him in their dorm on Monday evening, and he died at a local hospital after treatments failed.
He is the first mainland student to commit suicide in Taiwan.
Local police did not find anything explaining why he committed suicide, except a note that read, "Mother, I'm wrong."
According to Liu's mother, as quoted by the press office of the university, Liu had not been behaving abnormally prior to his death. She also denied media reports on the island claiming that emotional causes were behind her son's suicide.
Liu's mother has arrived in Taiwan to manage follow-up matters, and the university will arrange her stay on the island, according to the university.
However, since suicide is not covered by the university students' insurance program, the university could only release 20,000 New Taiwan dollars (670 U.S. dollars) as emergency aid funds to Liu's relatives, the university said.
The university said it will hold a memorial for Liu and offer more resources to help mainland students maintain their physical and psychological health.
As one of the island's most prestigious universities, Fu Jen Catholic University topped other Taiwanese universities and colleges by recruiting 104 mainland students in 2012.
