CHANGSHA, Jan. 29 (Xinhua) -- Three people were killed and eight others injured in a pileup on an expressway in central China's Hunan Province due to heavy fog, local authorities said.
The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday on the Hukun expressway that links Shanghai with Kunming, provincial capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, according to Huaihua City government.
Nine vehicles, including four large passenger buses and five sedans, collided into each other, killing three people at the scene.
All the injured have been sent to hospital, sources said.
The drivers believed to be responsible are under police custody.
A further investigation into the accident is under way.
Also on Tuesday, a separate pileup involving three vehicles in east China's Jiangxi Province left one dead and more than 16 injured, including six in serious condition.p The accident happened around 2 p.m. on a national highway in Jinxian County, police and firefighters said.
Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
