Natural Sunlight, the Source of Life

Mostly everything needs the Sun to grow. Without sunshine there would be hardly any life form. In fact, the survival of the vast majority of plants and animals on Earth is indeed directly or indirectly dependent on sunshine.

In 1920s, German physician Emil Adolf von Behring found that people in the four Nordic countries are more likely to suffer from a stress syndrome than people in other countries. The symptoms of the syndrome include insomnia, headaches, weight gain, irritability, depression, anxiety, fatigue, etc. A conclusion was drawn from further studies that this syndrome has something to do with the sunshine. Sunshine can stimulate the brain to secrete serotonin, which can regulate the activities of communication between neurons in the human brain and let people feel inspired with enthusiasm. Ten days without exposure to the sunlight, people would be prone to depression. The special geographical location of the four Nordic countries determines that the people there have much less opportunity to enjoy the sunlight than residents in other latitudes, which over time makes them “feel unhappy due to lack of sunshine”. Life was so magical and fragile, and the Sun is the source of life.



However, as human beings, we need not only to survive, but also to live an abundant life. Because survival is an instinct but life is an art. High quality life means more than just having enough to live comfortably, feel mental and physical pleasure, but also dignity, freedom, and acceptance and recognition from the various social environments people live in.

Up to now, perhaps nobody has ever deliberately ranked the categories of people to see which one category moves farther and farther away from sunshine and ever closer to death. However, if the drug addicts group is mentioned, probably no one will doubt their future and destiny being unpredictable and unbearable.

It is true that these are a group of people most needing assistance and tolerance, a group struggling in the natural sunshine and waiting for “social sunshine”. Because only the social sunshine is the ultimate reliance for their attempt to return; the people-oriented warmth and sunlight constitute the root for the prohibition of drug in the civilized society.
