BEIJING, Dec. 14 (Xinhua) -- Beijing municipal government said Friday that it will renovate the city's drainage system after a heavy rain in July resulted in multiple deaths.
Underground reservoirs, sewage drains and pipelines for 20 overpasses will be built or renovated and more water pumps will be installed to absorb floodwater, according to a statement from the Beijing Water Authority.
The renovated drainage network will be better able to handle downpours, the statement said.
Disabled drains under overpasses in downtown Beijing caused blackouts and paralyzed traffic when a massive rainstorm hit the city on July 21. About 80 people died in the rain, with many drowning under overpasses.
The renovations will start at the end of the month and are expected to be finished by next June, the3er4rerf statement said.
