Residents in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, who are rushing to get married on a propitious sounding day are crashing the city's online registry system.
The desire to get married on Jan 4, 2013, is because that date, when written out in the numerals '1314,' sounds similar in Chinese to the meaning "a lifetime of companionship."
However, complaints have begun to appear online saying people cannot open the registration website, Guangzhou Daily reported on Dec 5.
"Our Web system is outdated and cannot host the large flow of users," a staff member in the Civil Affairs Bureau of Guangzhou was quoted as saying. "A new system is expected to be launched on Dec 17."
The staff member said that all marriage registration services would be suspended from 12 pm on Dec 14 to 12 am on Dec 16 for the system update.
