Poon Tak-lun, an orthopedist in Hong Kong, has been dedicated to humanitarian volunteer work since the 1980s.
He received the award for outstanding contribution to volunteerism from the Red Cross Society of China on Tuesday in Beijing.
After the Sichuan earthquake in May 2008, Poon was part of the Hong Kong Red Cross' first medical volunteer team, arriving at Beichuan county three days after the disaster.
In July 2008, he became a volunteer helping the earthquake victims rehabilitate at Deyang Disabled Persons' Federation. The rehabilitation center, founded with 50 million yuan ($8 million) from the Hong Kong Red Cross, offers one-stop, free services for people with disabilities due to the earthquake.
Poon visits the center at least once a month. He has treated more than 1,500 patients, installed 1,200 prostheses and performed 300 surgeries.
