LANZHOU, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- Two people were confirmed dead while four others remained missing on Monday, almost a day after the car they were travelling in plunged into a reservoir in northwest China's Gansu Province, the local government said.

Gansu safety authorities confirmed the deaths of the two people on Monday afternoon.

The Volkswagen Santana sedan plunged over 20 meters from the road into the Xiangtangxia Reservoir at around 8 p.m. on Sunday night in Honggu District in Lanzhou, provincial capital of Gansu, according to a news update from the Honggu District government.

Rescuers are searching for the four missing people in the water at the reservoir, it added.

An investigation into the cause of the accident is under way.
