The existing air quality objectives (AQOs) in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region have never been fully achieved since they were adopted in 1987, according to a report to the Legislative Council Wednesday.
Hong Kong has yet to achieve its air quality index goal of never exceeding 100 since it was set in 2006-07. The number of days that readings topped the 100 mark has risen from 74 in 2007 to 175 in 2011, due to vehicle emissions, said the report.
The Environmental Protection Department estimated the city would spend HK$627 million ($80.90 million) on air quality in 2012-13.
