LIBERIA, May 30, (ChinaMil) -- The 14th Chinese peacekeeping taskforce to Liberia held an awarding ceremony recently at the barracks of the transport detachment of the taskforce. 558 Chinese peacekeeping officers and men were granted the "United Nations Peace Medal".
Composed of the transport, engineer and medical detachments, the 14th Chinese peacekeeping taskforce to Liberia was dispatched to the peacekeeping mission area on November 13 and 23 of 2012 in two batches respectively.
The transport detachment is stationed in Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, serving as the sole professional transport detachment directly under the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) to take charge of the transport support tasks for UNMIL's fuel, drinking water, building materials, fire equipment, office supplies, troops’ rotation and so on.
The other two detachments, the engineer detachment and the medical detachment, are stationed in Zwedru City, with the engineer detachment taking charge of road maintenance, bridge construction and engineering support tasks, while the medical detachment being responsible for the medical treatment, health care and other tasks for UNMIL personnel in Theater B.
The special representative of the UN Secretary General in Liberia, ambassador of the People's Republic of China (PRC) to Liberia, commander of the UNMIL peacekeeping force and others conferred the medals on the officers and men respectively. The military attach of the Chinese Embassy in Liberia, the chief of staff of the UNMIL headquarters, commanders of various theaters, and representatives of the peacekeeping troop units of various countries also attended the ceremony.
Among the 558 officers and men, 465 of them were awarded the second-class peace medals, 79 people were awarded the third-class peace medals, 12 were awarded the fourth-class peace medals, one was awarded the fifth-class peace medal, and another one was awarded the sixth-class peace medal.
Currently, the three detachments still remain at their posts to fulfill their peace missions. Two months later, they will complete the task transfer with the 15th Chinese peacekeeping taskforce to Liberia and return home.
