The National Key Laboratory of Nuclear and Biochemical Disaster Protection was inaugurated at the Chemical Defense Research Institute under the General Armaments Department (GAD) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) on December 18, 2012. The laboratory will effectively promote the research of basic theories, the innovation of frontier technologies and the popularization of scientific research achievements in the field.
According to a briefing, the laboratory was mainly built by relying on the Chemical Defense Research Institute under the GAD of the PLA and consists of such research and development platforms as the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, the Research and Test Center for Chemical Defense of Civil Air Defense Projects and the PLA Environmental Scientific Research Center. During the period of construction preparations, it made such scientific research achievements as the special protection system for civil air defense projects, the harmful chemical gas telemetry and the biosafety laboratory protection technology which were widely used in the security work of large activities, including the Beijing Olympic Games and the Shanghai World Expo.
"Nuclear and biochemical disaster protection involves such disciplines as military chemistry, radiation protection and environmental protection, and environmental science and engineering, and features high degree of military-civilian integration and intensive high and new technologies," said Pei Chengxin, director of the laboratory. After its establishment, the laboratory will focus on technological research on evaluation, monitoring, protection and handling of nuclear and biochemical disasters, and disaster environment management and repair.
