The 335 officers and men of the Chinese peacekeeping contingent to Lebanon were awarded the United Nations Medals of Peace on December 5, 2012 for their outstanding contributions to the UN peace cause.
The Chinese peacekeeping contingent has accomplished such tasks as mine clearing and explosive removing, project construction, comprehensive support and medical treatment. "The Chinese contingent is one of the most excellent peacekeeping contingents in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)," said Brigadier General Patrick Faylan, deputy commander of the UNIFIL.
The "Medal of Peace" is an important prize the UN to commend those with outstanding contributions to peace cause of mankind, and is the highest prize to peacekeepers from various countries in the world.
According to Colonel Huang Aiyu, commander of the Chinese peacekeeping contingent to Lebanon, the awarded Chinese contingent is composed of the 10th Chinese peacekeeping engineer battalion to Lebanon, the 9th Chinese peacekeeping medical detachment to Lebanon and staff officers, and its main body is made up of an engineer regiment under the Chengdu Military Area Command (MAC) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) stationed in southwest China's Yunnan province and the Kunming General Hospital under the Chengdu MAC of the PLA.
