One of the up and coming designers to keep an eye on at New York Fashion Week was Chinese-American Brandon Sun. His Fall/Winter Collection featuring somber tones and long silhouettes seemed fitting as the seasonal fashion event also fades to black.
8:30 a.m.-backstage at the Brandon Sun show, the designer administers final touches and last minute corrections.
9 a.m. Crisis averted. It’s just a half hour before the young designer’s Fall and Winter Collection goes on display, and just enough time for models to get touched up and photographed.
And then, it’s 9:30, and time for the show
A cutting edge presentation of somber grey’s and blacks, long coats and furs that the 30-year-old designer has become famous for.
Sun said, "What I really wanted to do was find some way to take my materials and reinterpret them in a way that shows, demonstrates a lot of movement. So for my furs I really, really sheared really, really low and I wanted to focus on mink because ’Blackglama’ has sponsored this collection. And with my fabrics I was really experimenting with a total flow by creating volume and creating a sort of tension with it."
Sun drew inspiration from Belgian interior designer Axel Vervoordt and the Japanese Gutai art movement of the 1950s.
Reporter: “We’re now at the venue known as ’The Box’ at Lincoln Center. It’s where designers can showcase their collections in a setting that differentiates from the usual runway shows.
It’s thinking out of the box in the box.”
