Qatar defeated Hong Kong, China 87-64 on Saturday to move into the second round of the 27th Asian basketball championships unbeaten in the competition being held in the Philippines.
Qatar's naturalized player Jarvis Hayes had 25 points, while Deoud Mosa Daoud had 17 markers for Qatar which ended the preliminaries with a 2-0 win-loss record in Group B.
Hong Kong, meanwhile, went winless in the preliminaries but will still move into the second round together with Qatar and Japan after Lebanon, the fourth team in Group B, was unable to play in the competition due to a FIBA suspension.
Qatar were 32-14 ahead at the end of the first quarter, in which the Middle East country even led by as many as 25 points.
Siu Wing Chan had 18 points for Hong Kong, which remained satisfied with how they played in the game.
"I guess we play fairly good today because we limited them in points in the paint," said Chan. "We tried to keep in the game using three-points and try to hustle back on defense and get more rebounds as possible."
"It's a good experience for us," said Chan.
"Qatar is a very strong team and we tried to make their margin as close as possible," said Hong Kong coach Wai Cheung Kwong.
