EuroBasket 2015 preparations well underway: Ukrainian president

KIEV, May 24 (Xinhua) -- The preparations for the EuroBasket 2015 European Basketball Championship are well in hand in Ukraine, President Viktor Yanukovych said here Friday.

"The preparations for the tournament are underway in six Ukrainian regions," Yanukovych said during his meeting with the President of International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Olafur Rafnsson.

Ukraine has a great experience in hosting big sports events, such as Euro 2012 European Football Championship and will use it to plan and stage the EuroBasket 2015, Yanukovych said.

Ukrainian President appreciated the Basketball Federation for their offer to host the tournament, saying that it is great responsibility for Ukraine.

For his part, Rafnsson thanked Yanukovych for his support of Eurobasket 2015 tournament and praised the level of cooperation between FIBA and the Ukrainian Basketball Federation.

The EuroBasket finals will be hosted by Ukraine in September 2015. The group stage matches will take place in Kiev, Odessa, Kharkov and Lvov, while playoff games will be held in Dnepropetrovsk and Donetsk.

Kiev will host the final match of the 24-team tournament.
