ROME, May 3 (Xinhua) -- The 96th edition of the Giro d' Italia (Tour of Italy), which begins on Saturday, will feature the first ever Chinese rider to take part.

Ji Cheng last year was the first Chinese to set off in the Spanish Vuelta race. He also took part in the 2012 Milan-San Remo.

The 25-year-old Chinese, who hails from Harbin, Heilongjiang province, started his riding career in 2006. He has raced for Argos-Shimano since 2007 and in 2008 won the first stage of the South China Sea Tour.

The 96th Giro d' Italia runs May 4-26 from Naples in southern Italy to Brescia in the north.
