The popular messaging App--WeChat is not just conquering user but turning rivals into partners. China Unicom in Guangdong and WeChat’s owner, Tencent are introducing the first joint SIM card. Users can enjoy WeChat’s new services of WeChat and discounts from China Unicom.
The WeChat Woka SIM card will be available for Unicom users in Guangdong. Users get 500MB worth of data for RMB10 every month. This a turnaround for relations between WeChat and China Unicom. Earlier in the year -- Chinese mobile operators had pressured TenCent to charge for its free messaging services on WeChat.
Because of WeChat’s popularity -- it has 400 million users, mobile phone users are ditching SMSs and making less phone calls--which eats into the mobile operators’ income.
But now the co-operation may thaw relations between the mobile giants and China’s biggest internet company. China Telecom plans to launch a new SIM card for WeChat next month.
