China, EU meet on solar panel dispute

BEIJING, June 21 (Xinhuanet) -- European and Chinese trade authorities have begun annual talks in Beijing, aiming to ease a dispute over solar panels and other issues that have soured their trade and investment relations.

On Friday, Chinese Minister of Commerce Gao Hucheng held a meeting with EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht and o discuss issues of mutual concern. Earlier this month, the EU announced duties averaging 47 percent on Chinese-made solar panels, cells and wafers but said it would postpone imposing the full tariffs until August to allow time for negotiation.

China is accused by the EU of dumping, selling the products at improperly low prices, and hurting European competitors. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has rejected the European measures and says it hopes for a settlement through consultations.
