HK stocks end flat

HONG KONG, June 18 (Xinhua) -- Hong Kong stocks ended almost flat on Tuesday with the benchmark Hang Seng index edging down 0. 02 points to end at 21,225.88 points, after trading between 20,995. 39 and 21,240.01. Turnover totaled 59.00 billion HK dollars (about 7.60 billion U.S. dollars).

The Hang Seng China Enterprises Index fell 10.94 points, or 0. 11 percent, to close at 9,733.54.

Three sub-indices lost ground, with the Utility sub-indice falling the most by 0.88 percent, followed by the Properties 0.43 percent and the Finance 0.14 percent. The Commerce and Industry rose 0.43 percent.

Banking giant HSBC, which accounts for the largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, rose 0.3 percent to 84.05 HK dollars, while its local unit Hang Seng Bank closed 1.0 percent lower at 118.50 HK dollars. Bank of East Asia, another Hong Kong's major bank, closed down 0.5 percent at 28.25 HK dollars. Local bourse operator HKEX fell 0.3 percent to 124.10 HK dollars.

Local developers Hang Lung Properties lost 0.7 percent at 27.50 HK dollars. Henderson Land, another major developer in Hong Kong, increased 0.3 percent to 46.75 HK dollars, and Cheung Kong Holding, a powerful HK-based developer controlled by billionaire Li Ka- shing, edged down 0.1 percent to 108.50 HK dollars.

As for mainland-based financial stocks, China Construction Bank, the country's second largest bank which accounts for the third largest weighting of the Hang Seng Index, declined 0.5 percent at 5.57 HK dollars.

ICBC, the world's largest bank by market value, retreated 0.2 percent at 4.82 HK dollars. Bank of China fell 0.2 percent to 3.23 HK dollars. Bank of Communications, China's fifth biggest lender measured by assets, closed flat at 5.58 HK dollars.

As for energy stocks, China's top refiner Sinopec rose 1.0 percent to 5.69 HK dollars. PetroChina, the country's largest oil and gas producer, ended up 0.8 percent at 8.59 HK dollars. (1 U.S. dollar equals 7.761 HK dollars)
