SYDNEY, June 5 (Xinhua) -- Travellers to Sydney Airport can look forward to improved traffic flow and better public transport connections, according to a draft master plan released for public comment Wednesday.
The plan includes provisions for a new one-way ring road to the T2/T3 precinct by 2018, which will provide up to 33 percent more " green light time" at key intersections, and a widened entrance for the precinct.
T1 precinct will also receive a new city-bound road and exit, better accessibility to trains and buses, and the car park entry and exit gates will be relocated.
The further concept plan aims to evolve Sydney Airport from separate international and domestic operations into two integrated terminals, to improve efficiency and allow passengers to transfer between services under the one roof.
"Sydney Airport is Australia's gateway airport. This concept plan provides the flexibility to meet the evolving needs of the aviation market," said Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Kerrie Mather.
There will be no changes to the curfew, flight paths or noise sharing arrangements, and no new runways.
"We are proposing five and 20-year ground transport solutions in this master plan to improve access to the airport and encourage more people to use public transport," said Mather.
New bus and multipurpose parking facilities aim to connect passengers to public transport, and Sydney Airport says it is advocating for new and more affordable bus and train services to and from the airport.
"Numerous government studies have shown that while we have runway and apron capacity for several decades to come, it is ground access to the airport that is impacting on customers," Mather said.
"We've consulted extensively with all stakeholders and in particular the NSW Government on developing a holistic ground transport solution," she added.
As the nation's most significant transport and tourism infrastructure, Sydney Airport generates an economic contribution of 27.6 billion AUD (26.86 billion USD) a year, said Mather.
"Sydney Airport has invested more than 2 billion AUD (1.95 billion USD) in improved passenger facilities and capacity since 2002 and we will be continuing to invest significantly to support the implementation of this master plan to facilitate the 74.3 million passengers a year forecast to be using the airport by 2033, " she added.
The 2013 Preliminary Draft Master Plan will be on public exhibition for the next 60 working days. Submissions may be made until 30 August 2013, after which the plan will be submitted to the federal government for approval.
