LONDON, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Retail sales in Britain recovered in both quantity and value in February after a subdued sales growth last year, showed official figures released Thursday.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said both the quantity bought and the amount spent in the retail sector increased by 2.6 percent in February compared with the same period of last year.

"The largest contributions to the increase in quantity bought came from other stores particularly computer and telecommunications equipment retailers, internet retailers and department stores," said the ONS.

Retail sales rose 2.1 percent in quantity in February compared with January and was up 1.8 percent in value.

According to the ONS figures collected over 5,000 retailers in Britain, the amount spent online accounted for 9.7 percent of all retail spending excluding automotive fuel.

The weekly spend across all retailing was 6.3 billion pounds in February compared with 6.1 billion pounds in the previous month, and the average weekly spend online last month was estimated at 540.5 million pounds (816 million U.S. dollars), an increase of 10.1 percent year on year.
