ABU DHABI, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Abu Dhabi National Energy, known as Taqa, said Sunday it acquired an interest in Himachal Sorang Power Limited, the developer of a 100 megawatt (MW) hydroelectric plant in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh.

Taqa, whose shares are listed at the Abu Dhabi exchange ADX, said construction of the Sorang hydroelectric project was 85 percent complete. The plant is expected to begin operations in 2013. Taqa disclosed neither the value of the deal nor the total cost of the plant.

The plant will be powered by the Sorang Khad river which originates in the Himalayas. The project will supply electricity to the northern states of India, a region currently facing power shortages, said the Abu Dhabi-based energy giant.

In an apparent public relations pitch, Taqa published the announcement parallel to the 3rd session of the annual assembly of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in Abu Dhabi, which began Sunday.
