RAMALLAH, March 6 -- Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erikat denied on Thursday reports that U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry had handed him a framework plan for peace with the Israel during their ongoing discussions in Washington.
"We are still discussing peace ideas... I have not received any documents from the Americans," Erikat told Xinhua on a phone interview.
Erikat and the head of the Palestinian intelligence agency have been in Washington since Tuesday to discuss the peace process with Kerry.
Palestinian media outlets reported that Kerry delivered to Erikat the U.S. framework peace plan to present to the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Meanwhile, a Palestinian official source told Xinhua on the condition of anonymity that the American framework for peace might be delivered to Abbas during his visit to Washington on March 17, but added that the U.S. proposals for peace fall short of Palestinian demands.
He added that Washington is pressuring Abbas to accept U.S. ideas, pointing out that the Americans are unwaveringly trying to compel the Palestinian to extend the current peace with Israel which are set to end next month.
Earlier this week, U.S. President Barack Obama met in Washington with the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu where both discussed the possibility of reaching a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority.
Ahead of their meeting, Obama said if the current U.S-mediated peace talks fail, his country will not be able to protect Israel from an international fallout as Israel is facing a growing international divestment-and-boycott campaign.
The U.S. has been working hard since last July to get the Palestinians and the Israelis to agree on a plan for peace that could end their prolonged conflict. But the peace talks reportedly have not made any tangible progress.
