The European Union (EU) on Wednesday announced it decided to freeze assets of 18 Ukrainians.

According to a statement issued by the EU,the affected assets were believed to have belonged to the state funds of Ukraine.

The EU said sanctions also contain provisions facilitating the recovery of the frozen funds, once certain conditions are met.

The measures will initially apply for 12 months, starting on Thursday.
