Bulgarian customs authorities have seized 5.78 kg of heroin at a checkpoint near the southeastern border with Turkey, officials said on Friday.
Customs inspectors at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint found the drugs in a Bulgaria-registered truck with a semi-trailer loaded with cement, entering from Turkey and driven by a Bulgarian, the National Customs Agency said in a statement.
After x-ray checks, the inspectors found 17 packages of heroin, hidden in one of the truck batteries, the customs said.
Bulgaria, with 20,000 to 30,000 heroin users, is a transit country for the highly addictive drugs to Europe. On Tuesday, also at Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint, the customs seized 5.53 kg of heroin hidden in a Bulgarian car.
