SANTIAGO, July 29 (Xinhua) -- Three marines were killed Monday in an explosion during a military exercise in Laguna Verde, Valparaiso, the Chilean navy said.
The marines were taking part in military drills at a seaside inlet called Caleta Hornillos to develop their underwater demolition skills when the explosives went off, the navy said in a statement.
The victims were identified as Second Lieutenant Miguel Casas Cordero Menendez, First Sergeant Marcos Llancavil Arce and Corporal Jose Luis Valenzuela Valderrama.
The statement said that the local naval prosecutor's office in Valparaiso will launch an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion.
