DHAKA, June 27 (Xinhua) -- A teacher of a leading Bangladeshi university was sentenced in absentia to seven years in prison Thursday for issuing threat via social media to kill the country's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
A general diary was filed on April 23, 2012 against the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) teacher, Hafizur Rahman Rana, for threatening on Facebook to kill Hasina.
The complaint mentioned in the general diary that Rana in his Facebook status had likened the prime minister to "a hyena who feasted on the country and was now eyeing the BUET."
He also said Hasina's efforts would be continued useless as "I would shoot her first in the head and then in the stomach before displaying her head in front of BUET as a warning to ward off other hyenas."
As the allegations were reportedly proved, later a sedition case was filed against the BUET teacher. The court in September last year framed charges against him.
Judge Md Jahirul Haque of the Senior Special Judges' Court of Dhaka Thursday passed the order against the BUET lecturer who had gone into hiding after getting bail in the sedition case.
The court also ordered the university to take disciplinary action against him.
A High Court Division bench of Bangladesh in January last year summoned another leading Jahangirnagar University teacher who allegedly "wished death" to Hasina on Facebook. The teacher, who was in Australia then, was sentenced to six months in absentia in jail for not obeying court summons.
