SANAA, June 15 (Xinhua) -- A Dutch couple working in the Yemeni capital of Sanaa has been kidnapped, an interior ministry official told Xinhua on Saturday.
"The couple was confirmed kidnapped a week ago in Sanaa," he said on condition of anonymity, citing a statement by the Dutch embassy.
"But there is good news that they will be released soon," the official said. The couple works as teachers at a private Yemeni university.
Foreigners are frequently kidnapped in Yemen by al-Qaida militants or tribesmen who asked for ransoms for the release of their jailed fellows. Most of the kidnapped have been freed unharmed.
Last month, two South Africans were kidnapped in Yemen's central province of Taiz. They are still missing.
A Finnish couple and an Austrian man kidnapped by the al-Qaida militants in Yemen last December were released in May.
However, the Yemen-based al-Qaida wing, the most active terrorist network in the Middle East, is still holding a Saudi diplomat.
