Syria stresses right to respond to Israeli violations

DAMASCUS, May 21 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian Foreign Ministry stressed Tuesday the country's right to immediately respond to any Israeli violation against its sovereignty.

The remarks were made in a letter addressing the United Nations, in which the ministry complained against the latest Israeli violation that took place earlier on Tuesday when an Israeli military vehicle crossed the cease-fire between Israel and Syria on the Golan Heights.

The Syrian army destroyed the vehicle and its occupants after crossing the cease-fire line, the ministry said, adding that the measure was part of Syria's right of self-defense.

The ministry also urged the UN to put an end to Israel's repetitive violations.

In another statement, the Syrian army confirmed the incident and said that after the Syrian troops destroyed the vehicle, Israel responded by firing two rockets at a military site in Syria but caused no casualties.

Slamming what it called the aggression, the statement said the recent move further proves the Zionist entity's involvement in the course of events in Syria through its direct coordination with the armed rebels.

Syria has recently accused Israel of helping the rebels on ground especially after Israel carried out two airstrikes against Syrian military positions over the past month.

On Monday, the Syrian army said it had found an Israeli vehicle in the central city of al-Qussair where the troops are fighting pitch battles to recapture the city from the Western-backed rebels.
